Google has used Wikipedia content to offer its users quick access to answers and facts through its knowledge panels for years. Now, Google will start paying for this content from Wikipedia.

Google is all set to start paying for using Wikipedia information. The company along with Internet Archive are the first customers of Wikimedia Foundation’s products. The product is called Wikimedia Enterprise, which offers access to Wikimedia content.

By paying for Wikimedia content, companies can reuse and source Wikipedia.

“Wikipedia is a unique and valuable resource, created freely for the world by its dedicated volunteer community. We have long supported the Wikimedia Foundation in pursuit of our shared goals of expanding knowledge and information access for people everywhere. We look forward to deepening our partnership with Wikimedia Enterprise, further investing in the long-term sustainability of the foundation and the knowledge ecosystem it continues to build”, said Tim Palmer, Managing Director, Search Partnerships at Google.

The product from Wikimedia Foundation is commercial in nature and requires companies to opt-in. It has had a decent beginning since going live a year back. The non-profit organisation has said that Wikimedia Enterprise is able to cover its current operating costs with a growing list of users exploring the product.

In a recent announcement Wikimedia Foundation clarified that all its products, including the suite of publicly-available datasets, tools, and APIs the Wikimedia Foundation offers will continue to be available for free use to all users.
