COVID-induced shutdowns in China may be prompting Google to shift assembly of phones to India according to media reports.

According to a report by The Information, Google is looking to shift its assembly to India after COVID restrictions continue to affect the manufacturing in China. Google has asked manufacturers in India to bid for 500,000-1 million units of Pixel smartphones.

This development comes as a follow up to reports of Apple planning to shift its assembly to India for same reasons.

If Google goes forward with the move, the total number of Pixel phones assembled in India would be 10-20 per cent of total annual production. In recent times, Pixel has been almost exclusively been manufactured in China.

Meanwhile, Apple’s plans of manufacturing in India, especially iPhone 14s, have been substantial and are planned for the release of phone in the country in October or later.

The loggerhead between the US and China is another reason for global companies to consider alternatives to manufacturing in China.

Along with India, Vietnam and Mexico have also been garnering a lot of attention lately as alternative manufacturing locations for American brands.
