Prime Minister Modi on Tuesday said that geo-spatial technology offers endless possibilities at the United Nations World Geospatial International Congress (UNWGIC).

Speaking at the event, the PM highlighted the role of geospatial technology in driving inclusion and progress.

Geospatial technology enables organisations to acquire data that is referenced to the earth. This data can be used for analysis, modeling, simulations, and visualisation. The technology allows governments to make informed decisions based on the importance and priority of resources most of which are limited in nature.

The technology can be used to create intelligent maps and models that may be interactively queried to get the desired results in a STEM application or may be used to advocate social investigations and policy-based research.

Emphasising on the importance of the technology, the PM quoted the example of PM GatiShakti Master Plan and the Digital Ocean platform, which are being powered by geospatial technology.

India has already set an example in sharing the benefits of geo-spatial technology, the Prime Minister said, citing the example of the South Asia Satellite for facilitating communication in India’s neighbourhood.

The PM said that the geospatial technology is key to “freedom to innovate”. He also underscored the endless possibilities that geospatial technology offers including sustainable urban development, managing and mitigating disasters, tracking the impact of climate change, forest management, water management, stopping desertification and food security.

He expressed his wish that this conference becomes a platform to discuss developments in such important areas.

While concluding the address at UNWGIC, he said: “With the stakeholders of the global geo-spatial industry coming together, with the policy makers and academic world interacting with each other, I am confident that this conference will help steer the global village into a new future.”
