Former chairman of Tata Sons Cyrus Mistry died in a road accident on Sunday while travelling from Ahmedabad to Mumbai, news agency PTI reported. Mistry's car hit a divider in Maharashtra's Palghar district neighbouring Mumbai.

Mistry was in a Mercedes car while travelling, a police official said.

“The accident took place around 3.15 pm, when Mistry was travelling to Mumbai from Ahmedabad. The accident took place on a bridge over the Surya river. It seems an accident," the police official told news agency PTI.

The other two persons travelling with him, including the car driver, were injured. Others injured have been shifted to a hospital in Gujarat.

Mistry was the chairman of Tata Group from 2012 to 2016.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended condolences and called his passing away a big loss to the world of commerce and industry.

Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also extended condolences and ordered a "thorough investigation" of the accident.

"The death of eminent industrialist Cyrus Mistry has caused a great loss to the industry and the financial world. He was a great personality who recognised the economic power of India. Modesty was his permanent trait. I pay my heartfelt tribute to him," Fadnavis tweeted.

Information has been received about this unfortunate accident near Palghar and the Director General of Police of the state has been asked to conduct a thorough investigation into this accident, Fadnavis added.
