Ford Motor Company said on Tuesday that the firm will lay off 3,800 of its workforce in the next three years in Europe, intending to streamline its operations to maintain its competency in electric cars.

The layoff will cut 2,300 jobs in Germany, 1,300 in the United Kingdom and 200 in other regions of Europe.

The firm said that by 2035, it aims to offer an all-electric fleet in the continent and the production of its first European-built electric car is due to begin this year.

The automaker said it is seeking for more competitive cost structure and leaner model for Ford in Europe stating that it will embark on the consultations with the intent to reach the reductions through voluntary separation programmes.

By 2025, Ford aims to cut 2,800 of the jobs in its engineering arm but plans to keep nearly 3,400 engineering jobs in the continent.

In addition, 1,000 jobs will be cut down from the administrative front.

Martin Sander, General Manager, Ford Model in Europe said in a statement that the firm recognises the uncertainty it is creating for the team, but will support them fully in the coming months.
