In a significant development, India's leading e-commerce marketplace Flipkart has tied up with last-mile delivery partner dPronto to strengthen its delivery system with skilled delivery boys.

Last mile is a term used in supply chain management and transportation planning to describe the movement of people and goods from a transportation hub to a final destination in the home.

dPront, set up by ex-CEO of Airtel Enterprise Rajiv Sharma, provides jobs to underprivileged youths from rural India as part of its Empower Pragati programme -- a private sector social enterprise focused on skilling. Today, ecommerce logistics, including lastmile logistics, are critical to the online retail market, and the size of the ecommerce industry is expected reach $5.1 billion by 2020.

Sharma said currently there are about two lakh bikers delivering products across the country and the size of the market is expected to grow 10 times by 2020. "And so will the requirement of delivery boys. We see this as the time to bring in new supply in the form of skilled delivery boys. In the next 18 months, we will train 10,000 of them."

"We are excited about providing last mile logistics services to Flipkart which also supplements their CSR objectives. We are confident that this partnership will scale rapidly to additional towns for Flipkart and thus transform the lives of underprivileged youth in all those towns," he added.

dPronto handles intra city logistics, getting products delivered quickly and cost effectively to customers and has the unique advantage, of its group company, Empower Pragati's vast training network. Empower Pragati (a Social Enterprise) holds the distinction of being one of the earliest training partners of National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), a public private partnership in India which facilitates skill development of the youth. Since its inception in 2010, Empower Pragati has skilled over 100,000 underprivileged people. The organization holds a target to train 20,000 in the next 3 years for jobs in the Logistics sector alone.

Last-mile delivery constitutes 40 per cent of ecommerce logistics and is also expected to grow at a CAGR of 48 per cent to reach $2.1 billion by 2020. This tie-up with dPronto gives companies such as Flipkart access to Empower Pragati's network of 600 centres that trains and supplies logistics staff, who can support Flipkart in its last-mile delivery.

"Flipkart is committed in its social objective of transforming lives of less privileged youth through respectable job roles. This tie up with dPronto gives us access to Empower Pragati's vast network of 600 centers across the entire country that trains and supplies logistics staff, who can support Flipkart in its last mile delivery," said Neeraj Agarwal, Senior Director, Delivery Operations at Flipkart.com.
