First Day Of 'Online Festive Sale' Sees Major Demand From New Users, Tier-2 & 3 Cities

On the first day of sale, Flipkart saw major sales in home category and beauty & general merchandise segments; same for Snapdeal, which also saw major demand from ethnic and everyday wear, and personal care products.

E-commerce firm Flipkart’s flagship Big Billion Day (BBD) Sale, which started from October 16, witnessed major demand from metros and Tier-2 cites with 50 per cent of new customers from the Tier-3 cities on the first day of sale. Similarly, for Snapdeal, which is running ‘Kum Me Dum Diwali Sale’ started from the same October 16, has seen nearly 30 per cent of the total orders on day 1 from first-time users and nearly 90 per cent of orders were from Tier 2 & 3 towns.  

Moreover, Flipkart informed that 60 per cent of the sellers on its platform are from the Tier 2 cities and beyond, including small cities such as Talcher, Velur, Sohagpur, Sindi, amongst others. Also, sellers from 167 new cities have joined e-commerce for this BBD. Ahead of the sale, Snapdeal added 1300 new pincodes which were previously unserviceable to extend its coverage deeper into Bharat.  

Which Products Are In Most Demand?  

Snapdeal shoppers are showing a high interest in products that help prepare for the festival season at home. They are home products kitchen appliances, fitness products and gym essentials, ethnic and everyday wear, and personal care products.  

Flipkart’s BBD saw the home category to receive 53 per cent new customers, and large appliances plus BGM (beauty & general merchandise) witnessed a near 50 per cent increase in new customers, all from Tier 3 cities.  

Among all transactions, Flipkart has informed that there has been 75 per cent increase in prepaid transactions. This could be a sign of concerned consumers continue to maintain social distancing as their priority and/or increased digital penetration into Bharat from the lockdown period.   

Snapdeal’s sale is going to end on October 20 whereas Flipkart’s BBD is ending on October 21.
