Female Enrolment Go Up From 8% To 20% In IITs

All India Survey on Higher Education reports a 20 per cent increase in female student enrollment among IITs in 2021-22 as a result of government schemes

In an effort to promote enrolment among girl students in higher education and research, the University Grants Commission (UGC) provides a special post-graduate scholarship across IITs in the country.

A similar programme by the name of Pragati has been active in the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), providing 10,000 scholarships yearly to girls entering technical education.

To further improve and encourage women to pursue undergraduate programmes in IITs, the number of seats at the institutes was also increased. The academic year 2021-22 recorded a 20 per cent increase in enrolment among girls, a significant increase from eight per cent recorded in 2016. NITs also recorded a nearly 21 per cent increase in enrolment in 2021-22. Similarly, the enrolment of girls in NITs has increased to nearly 22.1 per cent in 2021-22.

According to the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) report, there was been a consistent increase in the enrolment of female students in STEM courses. Reportedly, 41,97,186 in 2016-17 to 43,87248 in 2020-21

The information was given by the Minister of State for Education, Dr Subhas Sarkar in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
