India’s ambitious open e-commerce initiative, Open Network for Digital Commerce could see major e-commerce players like Flipkart, Reliance Retail, Amazon joining it. According to several people in the know of the development, the e-commerce platforms are in talks to join ONDC, which in itself is at a budding stage.

It may be noted that the open network’s pilot programme to onboard kiranas and small and medium businesses is underway in Bengaluru and 4 other cities. ONDC is being touted as a solution to break the dominance of large e-commerce players like Flipkart, Amazon and others.

Ekart, the logistics arm of Flipkart and Reliance Retail-backed Dunzo have joined the open platform for logistics services. It will also welcome Flipkart and Walmart-owned PhonePe soon as the payments app is in advanced stages of integration, Economic Times quoted in the know of it as saying. Moreover, Paytm is already a part of the network.

“The bigger ecommerce players have indicated to ONDC that they will support it. Besides tapping into new users, this will also enable platforms with sizeable business-to-business verticals to tap into the seller side of ONDC network to supply goods,” according to one of the people cited above.
