To accelerate the transition to electric vehicles (EVs), the European Parliament has approved legislation prohibiting the sale of new gas and diesel cars in the EU beginning in 2035.

The new legislation puts new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles on a path to zero CO2 emissions by 2035. (an EU fleet-wide target to reduce CO2 emissions produced by new cars and vans by 100 per cent compared to 2021).

By 2025, the Commission will present a methodology for assessing and reporting data on CO2 emissions from cars and vans sold in the EU.

“This regulation promotes the development of zero- and low-emission vehicles. It includes an ambitious revision of the 2030 targets as well as a zero-emission target for 2035, which is critical for achieving climate neutrality by 2050,” Jan Huitema, a member of the European Parliament, stated as much.

“Buying and driving zero-emission vehicles will become more affordable to consumers, and a second-hand market will emerge more quickly. It makes environmentally friendly driving accessible to everyone,” Huitema added.

Manufacturers with low annual production volumes (1,000 to 10,000 new cars or 1,000 to 22 000 new vans) may be granted a derogation until the end of 2035 (those registering fewer than 1000 new vehicles per year remain exempt), according to the Commission.

Starting at the end of 2025, the Commission will publish a report every two years to assess progress towards zero-emission road mobility.

In October last year, negotiators from EU countries, the European Parliament, and the European Commission first accepted the law.

Several automakers, including Volkswagen, have already stated that they will only produce EVs in Europe by 2033.
