The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced bye-election for the Lakshadweep Parliamentary constituency along with six Assembly constituencies of Arunachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu. The poll dates are fixed to be held on 27 February 2023 and date of counting will be 2 March 2023.

The bye-election was kept on hold in the Lakshadweep constituency due to the disqualification of Mohammed Faizal P.P. on the ground of conviction by the Court of Sessions, Kavaratti, Lakshadweep related to case number 01/2017 from the membership of Lok Sabha dated 11 January 2023 as per the provisions of Section 8 of Article 102(1)(e) under the representation of People Act 1951 of the Constitution of India.

Later, the Kerala High Court passed an order on 25 January suspending the conviction and sentence imposed on Faizal.

The ECI has decided to withhold the bye-election and to defer the issuance of notification for holding the bye-election in Lakshadweep.
