Domestic Air Travel Sees 67% Annual Growth, 51% YoY In August

Domestic airlines carried 770.70 lakhs passengers from January to August 2022, an increase of 67.38 per cent from the previous year

In August 2022, domestic air travel in India increased by 51 per cent year-on-year basis to 101.16 lakh passengers.

According to DGCA data, domestic airlines carried 770.70 lakhs passengers from January to August 2022 as compared to 460.45 lakhs passengers during the same period in the previous year, which tells an increase of 67.38 per cent annually. 

In July, there were 97.05 lakh domestic travellers.

Domestic air passenger traffic in August 2019 reached 117.93 lakh, which was still less than pre-Covid levels.

IndiGo carried 58.32 lakh passengers in August, while market share dropped from 58.8 to 57.7 per cent.

According to the data, Vistara flew with 9.81 lakh passengers over the time period, placing second in terms of market share with 9.7 per cent. However, the airline's market share decreased from 10.4% in July.

GoFirst's market share increased to 8.6 per cent in August from 8.2 per cent in July, and the airline carried 8.7 lakh passengers in August. Air India's market share increased marginally to 8.5 per cent in August from 8.4 per cent in July, and the airline transported 8.61 lakh passengers in August.

In terms of market share, SpiceJet dropped to the fifth position in August. The airline's market share decreased from 8 per cent in July to 7.9 per cent in August, when 7.98 lakh passengers travelled by airline. 

In August 2022, passenger load factors, or occupancy rates, of SpiceJet, IndiGo, Vistara, Go First, Air India, and AirAsia were 84.6 per cent, 78.3 per cent, 84.4 per cent, 81.6 per cent, 73.6 per cent, and 74.9 per cent, respectively.

Data also showed that the scheduled domestic carriers had received 557 complaints in total about passengers. Around 0.55 complaints per 10,000 passengers were reported in August 2022.

According to the same data, AirAsia India performed the best in terms of on-time arrivals in August with 93.3 per cent at four major airports: Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Mumbai followed by Vistara. Air India and IndiGo stood in third and fourth place respectively in order of best on-time performance.
