The pandemic has changed many things forever, and things won’t be going back to the way they were before, as reiterated by many industry experts. Consequently, the architecture of the future demands commitment to new and better design.

Bleness Phillip, Country Head Design, 3M India spoke of how the company coped with various challenges post-pandemic. He said, “The route the company took is to connect with the designers and understand the challenges they are facing. It is not just the availability of the products but also coping with what is new.” “What can be done to make the space safer for their employees and customers,” Phillip said.

Bleness Phillip was speaking at the Future of Design 2021 virtual event organised by BW Businessworld on 10th April. The event saw design thinkers and leaders in the design industry from across the country presenting their ideas.

Design For Sustainability

The question often surfaces on what the role of design is for sustainability. Design is so important for sustainability “because the role design plays in the development and commercialisation; designers have a unique opportunity to influence change,” said Phillip.

3M’s global headquarters are powered by 100 per cent renewable energy, and it aims to have 50 per cent of global operations powered by renewable energy by 2025. Moreover, 3M expects to invest approximately 1 billion dollars over the next 20 years to accelerate new environmental stewardship goals.

Phillip stated, “We take a holistic approach to sustainability including the products we manufacture, the process and infrastructure used to manufacture them.” “We truly believe in the power of collaboration and invite folks to come and work with us and discuss your sustainability challenges because we might have a solution for you,” Phillip said.

Phillip comes with more than 16 years of industry experience across automotive, industrial, consumer, architectural and healthcare domains. An alumni of the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, Phillip states his design values are rooted in empathy, quality of design craft and collaboration. Explaining his design philosophy, he said, “Design for me is a powerful innovation tool that can solve complex business and social problems to improve our lives. Design humanizes technology and helps connect brands with the user at a deeper emotional level, inspiring them beyond their imagination.”

He further stated, “I’m a servant leader and believe in empowering others to achieve the best they can. I strive to enable a system level approach to product innovation, brand experience and business development which is strongly based on business value creation”

This year, the FOD event and awards focused on design for a sustainable world. After facing massive disruption cause by the pandemic, using design to create solutions for problems that plague mankind is the need of the hour.
