The film and television industry is one of the biggest revenue generators in the country. Placing and creating the real world in cinema is quite a difficult task therefore, it has millions of working hands associated with it.

While speaking at BW Businessworld Future of Design, Indian actor Rahul Vohra said, “A production designer is the closest to the film director, he translates his vision into reality.”

He added that a production designer goes with the director to shoot locations and decides the spot's colour and the actors' costume colour.

Himani Dehlvi, a Costume Designer who has been the person behind many successful creations of films and dramas said that the script is a crucial part of a film in order to visualise the dressing of characters.

Dehlvi said, “Before designing, we see what era and mood the film has to be set in.”

She shared her recent experience of designing a television series on Netflix that was set in 1997, which was not a historical period but a time 20 years back when people used to dress differently. She said that when you make the world believable for the audience, it works and storytelling becomes more impactful.

The session also emphasised on the dynamic nature of films and cinema, earlier which was just limited to theatres but has now crossed over to OTT, where viewers are focusing on every microscopic detail.
