On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel, ‘Ekta Diwas’ was celebrated by the Arwind Kejriwal led Delhi Government by organising a Cycle Rally for the staff and common public on Friday.

The Rally was flagged off by LG of Delhi, Anil Baijal, from the ViceRegal Lodge, Delhi University.

"Rashtriya Ekta Diwas is celebrated for the last seven years now in the memory of Sardar Vallabhai Patel. He was the first deputy prime minister and home minister of India. He was also known as the Iron Man because he contributed not only to the administration but also to get unity in the country. He firmly believed that the princely states played an essential role in the freedom struggle, and it was necessary to persuade the 562 princely states to join the Republic of India. Today, we are also celebrating the 75th year of our independence. Sardar Vallabhai Patel was not only a barrister, but he was also an active member of the then Congress party. He is the one who united this country," Baijal said.

Baijal flagged off the cycle rally which was led by a group of female cyclists. In the 9 KM long route, patriotic songs were played to boost the momentum of the cyclists.

LG added, “If it wasn't for his relentless efforts, freedom from the Britishers wouldn't be possible. He managed to achieve the inconceivable task of convincing the 562 princely states to join the Republic of India. The honourable Prime Minister has also built a statue of Sardar Vallabhai Patel to honour his contributions in the freedom struggle."

“National Unity Day is the day which makes us re-dedicate ourselves to the cause of nation-building. Today’s cycle rally represents our commitment to the preservation of ecology and environment, our commitment to staying fit and healthy. These two are also equally important commitments which, in fact, are two building blocks of our resilient and strong nation,” said Chief Secretary, Vijay Kumar Dev.
