Union Minister of State for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship and Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that technology is not meant just for innovation, successes and unicorns but also for transforming the lives of people, and the narratives of governance and democracy.

“In 2015 when the Digital India programme was launched, Hon. PM had laid down three goals: that technology must empower people, must create more opportunities within the digital economy and should be available to countries that are not historically technology originators,” Chandrasekhar said, while speaking at the inaugural session of 1st Digital Economy Working Group (DEWG) meeting under India’s presidency of the G-20 being held at Lucknow.

The DEWG meeting is being organised by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) from 13 February to 15 February 2023, where discussion will take place on subjects such as developing Digital Public Infrastructure and cybersecurity for the digital economy.

Speaking on the occasion, The union minister said Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes that technology will bring in a stronger governance and build trust between the citizens and the government.

Giving credit to the vision and policies of the PM, for “re-designing India’s democracy” the minister said, “Technology today allows benefits, subsidies, government programs to reach Indian citizens without any delays, leakages and intermediation. This has created in turn, a significant amount of increase in trust between the citizens and the government”.

Stressing on the openness of the Internet and how countries need to work together to ensure that the internet remains open, safe & trusted and accountable for our citizens, Chandrasekhar said, “As the PM says, this is not the time for war or conflict but the time for our policymakers to work together to make a better future for the youth of the world”.

Union Ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw, Mahendra Nath Pandey, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Yogi Adityanath, Secretary to the Ministry of Electronics & IT Alkesh Kumar Sharm, and Chief Secretary, Uttar Pradesh Durga Shanker Mishra were also present at the inauguration event.
