Former Punjab Chief Minister and BJP leader Captain Amarinder Singh is probably to be appointed as next Governor of Maharashtra. This move comes after Governor B S Koshyari has conveyed his desire to step down from his duties to Prime Minister Modi.

Koshyari has been facing a major controversy and has been asked to resign by opposition parties of the state. On Monday, he notified the Prime Minister on his resignation.

He said that he has always received the love and affection from the Prime Minister and hoped that he will get the same response in this regard.

Koshyari had been appointed as the Governer of Maharashtra in September 2019. Previously, he has also served as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand.

Recently, his comment on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as an old icon sparked controversy while he was addressing a function at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University in Aurangabad.

Singh formed his own party, Punjab Lok Congress (PLC), after being removed as Chief Minister of Punjab in 2021. This had happened after he’d gotten involved in a tussle with Navjot Singh Sidhu.

However, his party failed to win seats in state assembly elections held in February last year.

Months later, Singh joined BJP and merged his party. In December, BJP also appointed Amarinder Singh as a member of its national executive.
