Union Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi is likely to replace Arif Mohammad Khan as the governor of Kerala.

Currently, Naqvi is serving as Cabinet Minister for Minority Affairs. During his tenure, he has implemented various schemes at a social-economic-educational level to uplift the poor and weaker sections of the minority community with a goal of "Development with Dignity.’

Having a long political, administrative and organisational experience, he has served as National General Secretary, National Vice President and National Spokesperson for the Bharatiya Janata Party. During this tenure, he has completed all the responsibilities that he has undertaken.

Even during the 2014 and 2019 parliamentary elections, he was in charge of the BJP's electoral reform committee and also a member of the party’s central election committee.

Having grown up in a Muslim family in Allahabad, he has always been devoted to politics, as at the age of 17, he actively got involved in the Sampoorna Kranti movement launched by Loknayak during the emergency period.

He was not elected in the 1980 Uttar Pradesh elections, but he was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Uttar Pradesh Rampur seat in 1998.

Under the tenure of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he also served as the minister of state for the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
