Electric vehicles are gradually becoming a much popular and favoured mode of transportation for commuters looking for cost-effectiveness, performance and environmental sustainability. 125 million EVs are expected to run all over the world by 2030. In India, many users have started to opt for EVs as the overall cost-benefits associated with the vehicle over a long-term are much better when compared to ICE vehicles. So if you are looking to buy an EV but are not sure what to look for, here are a list of features that definitely need to be in your vehicle to make it a great buy-

Performance and looks - Different EV models offer diverse performative abilities. Earlier considered as low-speed, high maintenance vehicles, EV engineering has come a long way and the recent models are giving conventional ICE run automobiles a run for their money. In fact, some e-scooters today, such as Okinawa’s Praise Turbo Mode, allows users to touch the 75 kmph mark. Users should also look for EVs that suit their design and color preferences. Design of the vehicle should also be evaluated for easy manoeuvrability.

Swappable battery - While we await the development of comprehensive charging infrastructures across many regions of the world, a new solution has emerged, that of swappable batteries. EV users can get a completely charged battery for their current one. While this is a new feature, there are a few Indian manufacturers who are working towards introducing EVs and E2Ws equipped with this feature.

Mileage - One of the most important features of EVs is the high mileage on offer. At a time when prices of conventional fuels are skyrocketing, EVs can offer more than 100-120 km per charge. For daily commuters who are looking for the most cost-effective options to reduce the strain on their overall budget, a one-time investment in an EV often brings long-term benefits.

Loading Capacity - For buyers looking to put EVs into commercial usage, the loading capacity needs to be evaluated well. Potential buyers are best advised to take test drives and trials for manoeuvrability and durability checks.

Superfast charging -The most important feature for an EV, users need to know everything they can about the charging functionality of their e-vehicle. The type of motor and battery play an integral role in deciding the rate of charging for an EV. For instance, a lithium-ion pack is a much more sophisticated battery type than a lead acid one. Lithium-ion batteries, an evolved form of the lead-acid battery framework, have also accelerated the charging duration substantially, which should be focused on by potential buyers.

Service centers - With a lack of charging infrastructure and service centers, maintaining an EV to keep it in peak performance phase can be a bit difficult. Only those brands should be opted for which have a strong dealership and service center network spread throughout the country. Also, spare parts should be easily available and instant response mechanisms should be available in case any component develops a fault as mechanics dealing with conventional vehicles might not be adept at handling EV problems.

Allied features - Safety features, over-the-air software upgrades, security features such as GPS tracking, alarms, sensors, geo-fencing etc. are some of the basic features new age EVs come equipped with. Due to an EV’s battery being an integral component of the vehicle’s structure, EV engineers are focusing more to improve passenger and vehicular safety aspects. Potential EV buyers should evaluate the vehicle of their choice for such features as it is an important feature to ensure friends and family back home do not have to worry as you go for a joyride!
