After putting up a bid of Rs. 16,437 crores, STAR India has finally bagged the global broadcasting and digital right of IPL.

After a fierce battle with Sony, Star India secured the rights for the period, 2018-2022.

The bid was primarily divided into broadcast and digital rights. Contenders included other big companies such as Facebook, Amazon, Twitter, Yahoo, Reliance Jio, Sony Pictures, Discovery, Sky, British Telecom and ESPN Digital Media which also purchased the bid.

While Sony’s bid was higher in the broadcast category, it didn’t bid for other categories except for one of about 84.50 crore. Star India however bid for all the other rights and won due to higher cumulative bid.

Vivo, the Chinese smartphone giant, still owns the title sponsorship for IPL.
