As Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel took oath as the 18th chief minister today, the Bharatiya Janta Party MLA from Ghatlodia will be enjoying his second term as the chief minister. In a glittering ceremony held at the Helipad Ground inside the new secretariat complex at Gandhi Nagar, Patel was administered the oath by Governor Acharya Devvrat. The ceremony was attended by chief ministers of BJP ruled states, alongwith union home minister Amit Shah and PM Narendra Modi

Along with him, the other MLAs who were sworn in today included Naresh Patel, Bachubhai Khabad, Parshottam Solanki, Harsh Sanghavi, Jagdish Vishwakarma, Rushikesh Patel, Raghavji Patel, Balwant Singh Rajput, Mukeshbhai Zinabhai Patel, Kanubhai Desai, Kunwajibhai Mohanbhai Bavaliya, Dr Kuber Dindor and Bhanuben Babariya.

Patel has been a party worker for the longest time and was raised to the position of Chief Minister last year after Vijay Rupani was removed by the BJP. Patel was said to be a surprise replacement to Rupani, but leading the party to the victory door with 156 seats and breaking PM Narendra Modi’s record in his state has made Patel as one of the most successful BJP leaders in the political history of Gujarat. Here are few things one needs to know about this Patidar leader who drove the victory chariot of BJP in Gujarat.

Engineer turned politician

Born in 1962, Patel has done his diploma in civil engineering from Government Polytechnic Ahmedabad. He was associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) from his youth, but joined mainstream politics only in the 1990s.

No criminal cases against him

Patel is a politician with a clean record. Since his debut in politics, he hasn’t had any criminal case against him. He is into construction business and till the time he became an MLA in 2017, he used to work from his own office.

5th Patidar chief minister of Gujarat

The Patidar community is said to be one of the strongest communities in Gujarat and Patel is the fifth member of the community to become the chief minister. Before him, Chimanbhai Patel, Babubhai Ptel, Anandiben Patel and Keshubhai Patel have been the chief ministers of Gujarat.

From Municipal Councillor to CM

Patel’s journey in politics has been quite an interesting one. He has been a member of the Memnagar Palika in 1995, 1999 and 2004. He was a councillor from Thaltej Ward from 2010 to 2015. Later, Patel also became the chairman of the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) from 2015 to 2017. His first assembly election was in 2017, when he contested from Ghatlodia and won against the Congress candidate with a record margin of 1,17,000 votes. In the 2022 assembly elections, Patel defeated the congress candidate by getting a vote share of over 80 per cent.
