The central government on Monday said the number of beneficiaries under the PM-KISAN scheme PM KISAN has crossed 10 crore farmers from 3.16 crore for the first instalment period – more than 3 times increase in over 3 years.

The statement came hours after Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge slammed the Centre and alleged that the number of beneficiaries has declined with every installment.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in a statement said that PM KISAN through a span of over 3 years has successfully provided assistance of more than Rs 2 lakh crore to a crore of needy farmers.

"Of this amount, more than Rs 1.6 crore has been transferred since the lockdown due to Covid-19 Pandemic," it added.

Under this scheme, the financial benefit of Rs 6,000 per year is transferred into the bank accounts of farmer families through direct benefit transfer.

This scheme was launched on 24 February 2019 by the Prime Minister. The ministry also said that PM KISAN is an evolving scheme. The scheme was initiated with the eligibility of the farmers determined by self-certification by each farmer.

"Improvements have been made over time in the way farmers are registered and verified by the states," it said.
