BMC Annual Budget To Be Tabled Today, Expected To Touch Rs 50,000 Cr Mark

Every year, there is a 10 per cent increase in the BMC budget, this year as well it is expected to reach up to Rs 50,000 crore

The BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will be tabling its annual budget today i.e on Saturday and the budget is expected to touch the Rs 50,000-crore mark. The budget this year will be presented by the BMC municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal. 

According to information, the Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday directed the BMC commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal to keep pollution control, strengthening of the health system, administration transparency and the city's beautification as the priorities in this year’s annual budget. 

In 2021-22, the budget had a total outlay of Rs 39,083 crore while in 2022-23, the budget had a total outlay of Rs 45,949 crore. Since there is an increase of 10 per cent in the BMC budget every year, it is expected to touch the Rs 50,000 crore mark this year. 

The budget is expected to make some big announcements with regards to roads, coastal roads and beautification. These may include the following - 

  • Provisions for Bhandup multispeciality hospital, Siddharth Hospital at Goregaon, Oshiwara maternity hospital as well as seven Sewage Treatment Plants at Worli, Bandra, Dharavi, Versova, Malad, Bhandup and Ghatkopar. 

  • Emphasis on environmental measures, as Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has directed that air purifier towers should be installed in Mumbai. 

  • There may not be new direct taxes on the citizens in this year's budget. 

  • The CM had earlier instructed BMC to start Skill Development Center in municipal schools for class IX and X students and also to increase their number in view of the demand of Mumbai Public Schools. This too may feature in the budget.
