The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday launched an attack on billionaire George Soros. The founder of Open Society Foundation had earlier predicted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be weakened by the “woes of business tycoon Gautam Adani”. Union Minister Smriti Irani called upon Indians to unitedly respond to "foreign powers who try to intervene in India's democratic processes", calling Soros’ remark as an "attack on India".
Taking to social media, the BJP shared Irani’s words from the party office. "Today, as a citizen, I call upon every individual, organization and society to denounce the intention of this individual who is seeking to weaken our democratic interests for his personal gains,” said Irani.
It may be recalled that Soros on Thursday said PM Modi would “have to answer questions” from foreign investors and parliament on allegations of fraud and stock manipulation at Adani’s industrial empire. He said this while delivering a speech at the 2023 Munich Security Conference, George Soros noted that PM Modi had been "silent" on the topic.
Irani said that everyone should condemn his remarks in one voice. She alleged that Soros wanted to destroy Indian democracy and wanted some "hand-picked" people to run the government here. In her attack on Soros, the union minister said that he not only attacked PM Modi, but also targeted the Indian democratic system. Referring to his remarks, Irani said the remarks of the billionaire come at a time when India is rising to become the 5th largest economy in the world.
The BJP tweeted saying “Notably, at a time when India rises to become the 5th largest economy in the world, and when India receives gratitude by the global leaders like Presidents of the USA and France, and the PM of England for enabling employment not only in India but also in these three nations..”
The firebrand BJP leader, who is a parliamentarian after defeating Rahul Gandhi from Amethi, called Soros's reply a 'declaration to destroy India's democratic processes', the firebrand BJP leader said, "I urge every Indian to give a fitting reply to George Soros."
"We won't bow down to Soros' wrong intentions. We have fought with foreign forces before and will fight in the future as well," Smriti Irani added.
