American firm Apple will not apply for the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme 2.0 for laptops and computer gear, said media reports. With a budgeted commitment of Rs 17,000 crore, the Centre recently unveiled the programme with the goal of persuading firms like Dell, Samsung, and Apple to produce IT gear in India.

According to a media report, the Cupertino-based tech giant now solely plans to localise smartphone and accessory manufacturing in India. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity), according to the statement, is aware of the development.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the minister of state for technology, stated to Bloomberg on May 19 that Apple and Samsung are two corporations interested in boosting electronics production in India.

For making iPhones and other Apple accessories in the nation, Apple has benefited from the inaugural PLI programme. The business wants to grow laptop manufacture in Vietnam rather than India, though. By the middle of 2023, it is planned to begin producing MacBooks there.
