Apple has officially acknowledged the issue and identified the culprits. The tech giant revealed that the problem stems from a combination of factors, primarily a bug in its latest iOS 17 software and recent updates to specific third-party applications.

Apple has assured users that the overheating problem is temporary and should not raise safety or performance concerns. The company also clarified that the upcoming iOS 17 bug fix will not sacrifice performance to address the temperature-related concerns.

According to Apple, the warmth experienced by some users during the initial setup or device restoration is attributed to increased background activity, which will normalise over time. The company has urged users to be patient during this initial period.

In addition to the iOS 17 bug, Apple pointed to certain third-party apps exacerbating the problem. Notable among them are the popular games Asphalt 9 and the social media giant Meta's Instagram, along with the ride-sharing app Uber. Instagram, however, has already taken corrective action and resolved the issue with its app in a 27 September update.

Apple is actively collaborating with the developers of these problematic third-party apps to roll out fixes.

One reassuring aspect is that Apple's iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models have been designed to mitigate this overheating issue. The use of new titanium shells in these models enhances heat dissipation compared to previous stainless steel models, resulting in a more controlled operating temperature. Apple clarified.
