Like the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change can have dire effects on the earth and society at large. These implications can become irreversible if corrective measures are not taken on an urgent basis. Climate change and added environmental deprivations have crushed our natural systems, causing new and serious diseases as well as are causing a collapse of the global economy. But as these two important aspects - climate change and coronavirus sorely remind us of the damage we’ve caused, it is the time to restore the earth before it is too late.

Impact of COVID on the environment

Last year saw a positive impact on the environment as the COVID-19 lockdowns caused individuals being locked into their homes thereby providing the earth an opportunity to breathe freely. However, as soon as the lockdowns were lifted, humans got back to leading their lives as usual and started exploiting the natural resources again. In today’s time, every individual on this earth symbolises his or her social position and self-worth by the number of vehicles, cell phones and other gadgets they own. This impact can be witnessed on the planet and the environment at large. However, the pandemic has given us the opportunity to reflect back on our actions and take a plunge in making a change in the way we live, breathe and sustain the mother earth.

The need to switch to sustainable products / solutions

While the pandemic has led to an exponential use of technologies for all kinds of communications, it is important to be mindful and use technologies that will support in saving energy thereby reducing the carbon footprint. At an individual level, one such steps is to move toward the adoption of energy efficient lighting solutions that are not only sustainable but also offer multiple benefits to the people and the planet at large. LED bulbs are known to help reduce air pollution, making the air healthier to breathe. Additionally, the Indian government is also taking various steps to promote the use of LED lights. One such instance of this is the recently launched Gram Ujala programme by State-run EESL arm Convergence Energy Services Ltd (CESL) under which high quality energy efficient LED bulbs will be provided for Rs 10 per piece in many villages of the country. This programme will have a noteworthy impact on India's climate change action energy savings of 2025 million KWh/year as well as CO2 decreases of 1.65 million tonnes CO2/year. To support this programme further, companies such as Syska Group have extended their support through a public private partnership with CESL and are finding mechanisms that allow private sector companies to join hands towards a larger common goal of promoting energy conservation, climate change mitigation.

In addition, we can also focus on some basic yet imperative practices to help preserve the earth and its resources by turning off electrical and electronic appliances such as fans, lights, television, chargers when not in use. To build a sustainable future, it has become crucial that we promote the use of sustainable and environmental friendly products and solutions that consume low energy as well as have zero effect on the mother earth.

Importance of environmental compliance certifications

Companies also need to adhere to the environmental compliances and make certain that the industrial and manufacturing plants do not emit hazardous gases that can cause a damage to the environment. It is crucial for manufacturing companies to get ISO 14001 certification as it will helps them to improve their ecological performance through better efficient use of resources and lessening of waste, achieving a competitive advantage and the trust of stakeholders.

As Earth Day is being observed globally, it is the prerogative of each one of us to contribute towards restoring our earth for future generations. Taking corrective measures and steps towards leading a sustainable life will help in conserving the environment thereby guaranteeing a greener, more secure planet. As a global citizen, it is each human’s responsibility to continue endorsing environmental awareness and safeguard our mother earth!
