The company also said that it hired rapidly during the pandemic.

The chief executing officer (CEO), Andy Jassy in a statement to his staff said that between the reductions they made in November and the ones they are sharing today, they plan to eliminate just over 18,000 roles.

He further added, "We are working to support those who are affected and are providing packages that include a separation payment, transitional health insurance benefits, and external job placement support.”

He said, "We are working to support those affected and are providing packages that include a separation payment, transitional health insurance benefits, and external job placement support."

The CEO informed that some of the layoffs would take place in Europe. Jassey also said the announcement was made suddenly because one of their teammates leaked internal information.

Amazon had 1.54 million employees working worldwide at the end of September not including seasonal workers recruited during periods of increased activity, particularly during the holiday season.
