Congress leader Ajay Maken has quit as the party's Rajasthan in-charge, denoting that he is upset with the events that took place in late September when Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot refused to resign from the post to contest the Congress president's election at the last minute, sources said.

The rivalry took a twist when more than 90 MLAs who were loyal to Gehlot didn't attend an important party meeting and instead handed over their resignation letter to the speaker.

It was noted that action will take against such MLAs but nothing happened later, which has now upset Maken and led to his resignation from States in-charge post, the sources further cited.

In his resignation letter, he said, "Wedded to the ideology of Congress for the last three generations and being in active Congress politics for over 40 years, I will always remain an ardent follower of Rahul ji, whom I trust and have faith in beyond words."

It was further mentioned in the letter that he wants to work for Delhi through trade unions and non-profits, increasing the crisis of air pollution, and for the rights of street vendors and slum dwellers.

Maken asked the party to appoint a new Rajasthan in-charge before the first week of December as the by-election will be held on 4 December.
