A massive earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck the northwestern part of Wellington, New Zealand. According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 57.4 km. At 7.38 p.m., the earthquake struck at a depth of 76 kilometres. It was located 50 kilometres northwest of Paraparaumu.

Within 15 minutes, over 31000 people reported feeling the earthquake on GeoNet.

“That was a big shake! A magnitude 6.0 earthquake, 57 kilometres deep and 50 kilometres north-west of Paraparaumu, was felt throughout the North Island,” New Zealand's Civil Defence agency stated.

There were no immediate reports of damage and no tsunami warning.

Residents, however, reported feeling the ground shake for 10-20 seconds, compared to a convoy of massive trucks passing by.

The quake struck as the cleanup from a devastating cyclone that killed four people and caused widespread damage across the North Island began.

“It is already a very stressful time for people; look after yourself and those around you,” the civil defence agency advised.
