A total of 227.46 lakh metric tonne (LMT) wheat and 204.67 LMT rice are available in the central pool as on 01 October 2022, said Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha on Friday.

To meet the domestic demand, India in May 2022 suspended the export of wheat, citing the sudden spike in global wheat prices and the resulting food security risks in the country.

In April, India invoked the peace clause a third time to exceed the 10 per cent ceiling on the support it offers to rice farmers. In order to meet the domestic food security needs of its poor population, it has used the peace clause of the WTO to provide excess support measures to rice farmers for 2020–21.
