BSE Sensex closed with 35.78 points loss at 39,031.55, while the NSE Nifty ended 6.50 points lower at 11,748.15.
The rupee opened strong at 69.83 at the interbank forex market, then gained further ground to touch 69.70 per dollar
The 30-share index dropped 154.60 points, or 0.40 per cent, to 38,912.73 in early morning trade, after touching a high of 39,068.67
According to traders, investor sentiment was buoyed by firm buying on banking counters
Forex dealers said, easing crude prices, sustained foreign fund inflows and selling of the American currency by exporters supported the rupee
The Sensex finished at 38,730.86, down by 323.82 points, or 0.83 per cent
The 30-share index was trading 42.83 points or 0.11 per cent higher at 39,097.51, and the NSE Nifty rose 22.95 points or 0.20 per cent to 11,749.10
The BSE Sensex soared 489.80 points, or 1.27 per cent, to close at 39,054.68
A strengthening US dollar against major global currencies also affected rupee's trading pattern, forex dealers said.
