Sugar High

Sugarcane production during 2009-10 is expected to see a decline of -1.30% at the all India level according to the second advance estimates of crops production for the current agricultural year. Except Tamil Nadu, all the major sugar producing states see a decline in production during the year. UP and Maharashtra, the top two sugarcane producing states, see -1.61% amd -1.20% decline

INFRASTRUCTURE

Freight On Track

Indian Railways hauled 803.50 million tonnes of freight earning Rs 52,584.57 crore of revenue during the first 11 months of fiscal 2009-10 (April-February). The freight carried shows an increase of 52.20 million tonne over the freight traffic of 751.30 million tonne during April-February 2008-09, an increase of 6.95%

ECONOMY

Calling Ports

India's exports during April-January 2009-10 fell by -17.77% to $1,31,930 miilion. Imports during the first 10 months of fiscal 2009-10 amounted to $2,18,534 million, a -19.67% decline from April-January 2008-09 imports. Total trade during April-January 2009-10 amounted to $3,50,464 million, recording a negative growth of -18.96%

FINANCE

The Rupee Saga

Borrowing at 29 paise will account for the largest share of every rupee that the government will use for financing the Union Budget 2010-11, while will it spend the most - 21 paise - on central plan. Reflecting the improved finances, the dependence on debt has come down from 34 paisa in the previous budget to 29 now, as per the proposals presented by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in Parliament on Friday
