Yoda and Some Corporate Magic!

He listened, smiled just held my shoulders and said in the most relaxed way possible, ‘take it easy, Shivjeet, life is long, we will do many things together.’

For those of you not familiar with him, Yoda is a character from Star Wars. He is as ageless as he is timeless and everything he says comes true, though it can take you years to figure it out. In the movies it’s part of the story but in the real world it’s like a touch of magic – almost impossible.

I had a Yoda moment many, many years ago. It was just 10 seconds but now 10 years later, it seems to be manifesting as a reality – corporate magic!

Ten years ago I was a young ambitious eager beaver searching for my 15 minutes of fame. So imagine to my surprise when I got a call up from one of the biggest media houses in India to anchor a new show on TV. I went along for a series of auditions and was finalised by none other than someone who is one of the most well-known anchors on TV today.

(However the story is not about him).

Unfortunately despair was to follow because they decided to shift the show to be shot in Bombay which lost me the role! I was really crestfallen, angry and upset.

That’s when I met a Yoda. He was the producer of the show. I stormed into his room to protest and accost him. However I was totally unprepared for what was about to follow. He listened, smiled just held my shoulders and said in the most relaxed way possible, ‘take it easy, Shivjeet, life is long, we will do many things together.’ My word! His tone was so transcendent that my mind became still. The Yoda moment!

Ten years passed.

I went ahead and did my stuff, launched a new agency, wrote a book, set up my Internet company etc. etc. … most of which you all know.

And from time to time I read about him and his meteoric rise to power in the media world as he moved from company to company and made waves. But we never actually met. Once I was in the same conference as him and thought I would meet him … but had to rush off and didn’t even know if he would remember.

Then just last week I was reviewing all our upcoming pitches and big deals with my team and one of them came to my attention. We were doing a deal with 15 very powerful CEO types which could really change our growth trajectory and there was an obstacle in terms of some information we had to clarify.

When I looked closely I saw Yoda’s name was one of them. So while I didn’t say anything to my team a few days later I got his number and sent him a short message about our Yoda moment. I expected one of three replies = 1) No reply 2) Oh yes I remember 3) Hi, keeping busy, let’s touch base next month.

This was his reply.

‘Wow Shivjeet, you have some memory. I do remember the episode from years ago. And I am delighted you do too. I shall be happy to be of any help. We will speak tomorrow. Sleep Well. Thank you.’ Awesome. I don’t know what will come of it as the deal is still in process. But I’m happy there is a little magic in the corporate world too! And I will sleep well.
