World Diabetes Day is the primary global campaign which was launched in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to create awareness in response to the rapid rise of diabetes around the world.
India currently represents 49 per cent of the world’s diabetes burden, with an estimated 72 million cases in 2017, a figure expected to almost double to 134 million by 2025. According to WHO, diabetes is a growing challenge with an estimation of 8.7 per cent diabetic population in the age-group of 20 and 70 years.
This presents a serious public health challenge to a country facing a future of high population growth and a government attempting to provide free health insurance to half a billion people.

Quinoa: This gluten-free superfood is one of the most popular superfoods among the health-conscious people. It is high in proteins, fibres, vitamins and minerals. Quinoa is often used as a substitute for rice, however, in reality, quinoa is not a grain. It is a kind of a seed. Quinoas are beneficial for people with diabetes due to its high fibre and protein content. Some of its health benefits include weight loss, protection from heart diseases, reduction in the risk of atherosclerosis and coronary heath disease.
Black Raspberries: Botanically known as Rubus Occidentalis, Black Raspberries are being hailed as “the king of berries”. These berries are generally available during three weeks of July and in off-season, you can find them as freeze-dried or Black Raspberry Jam. It helps in losing weight due to its perfect nutritional value. It has only 60 calories in one cup, they have two grams of proteins and are high in fibres. Due to its health beneficial properties like rich in antioxidants, minerals and polyphenols, black raspberries are excellent for people with diabetes.
Pistachios: It is a sweet-flavoured superfood which has intriguing viridescent hues. These are one of the oldest nuts which are being grown in the middle east for thousands of years. They are even mentioned in the old testament of the bible which involves their rich history as a prized food source.
Like all other nuts, Pistachios also have health beneficial properties like high-protein value, good ratio of fatty acids including Omega-3, rich in antioxidants including lutein, beta-carotene and gamma-tocopherol and it is also a good source of the mineral phosphorus. They help in keeping glucose in control and lowers insulin due to which they are good for diabetic patients.
Kale: This superfood is the king of healthy greens as it provides the recommended daily intake of Vitamin K and A. This small package includes chemicals like glucosinolates which helps in the prevention of cancer. It is also rich in potassium which helps in the management of blood pressure. This is also one of the reasons that this superfood is good for the victims of diabetes.
Beetroots: Beetroots are one the most satisfying superfoods in terms of taste. This vegetable is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, fibre and phytonutrients which helps in managing blood sugar. They also include natural sugars which do not get converted into glucose quickly due to which it is beneficial for diabetics.
