Only a handful of years have passed since technology started making a massive headway in education but anyone who has been watching the space from close quartershave noticed how the process of imparting education has undergone a gargantuan change in this short span of time.
Education has evolved significantly from the days of rote learning from text books to the innovative & engaging ways using technology to ensure that the learning is not just effective, but also intuitive & fun for the young minds. Whether offline or online, technology has facilitated effective pedagogy and has enabled delivering educational content to students conveniently, and on time, thereby transforming the educational experiences through the application of enhanced personalized learning. Witnessing this fast-tracked growth of tech enabled-learning in India, 2018 holds the potential of being a landmark year for ed-tech with all the new-age companies working towards a common goal, that of revolutionizing the way we learn.
Education is a long-term process. While technology has quickened the process and has been reaching out to more learners through machines, it cannot redefine the basic approach required to meet the needs of children who fail to understand the academic concepts. It is only by adopting a seamless blend of the efficiency of the digital medium with the penetrative and focused tutor-assisted learning methods that one can create an impact on the way education is consumed. The current crop of ed-tech firms is all set to garner the interest of masses wherein the focus will be on both the online and offline assisted learning.
Their educational models are tailored with machine-assisted solutions that resort to an individual student’s learning requirements by stressing more on elucidating topics or reiterating concepts that students haven’t grasped. This will enable the students with different learning preferences to learn as per their individual capabilitiesand teachers can help them with understanding the core concepts by offering additional help when needed.
While the last decade saw technology being used only as a medium to educate or train people, the year 2018 will witness technology playing the vast role of providing all the necessary support to the trainers, students as well as the parents for creating a better learning ecosystem. People often ignore the fact that in the absence of a tutor that can inspire, help students through their struggles, adopt teaching methods that are appropriate to the student’s needs and abilities, it will be tough for the students to succeed in their career paths. Therefore, a balance of both traditional learning along with digital tools is the need of the hour for creating an environment for learners that is informative yet flexible for achieving good scores.
Technology can certainly change the way students learn, but for students to avail the complete benefits of digital tools, a hybrid approach of Emotional Intelligence where tutors add value to lessons and inspire students to attain their goals is essential. Currently, education, as a sector is poised for massive disruption wherein Artificial Intelligence, is moving beyond just churning out relevant content for students, or creating exceptional products/services by helping the ed-tech platforms to deliver unparalleled results in three major areas – tutor profiling, performance analysis, and operational efficiencies. The segment is focusing on video with only a handful of enterprises experimenting with AR (Augmented Reality). However, this year will see a lot of Virtual Reality being used besides AR for stimulating the mind for projects before it starts getting mainstream. Witnessing such tech innovations and rising acceptance of online platforms as a medium of acquiring learning in the Indian demographics, there are higher chances of ed-tech ventures attracting higher interests in the eyes of the investors. As a result, the government will also be eyeing intensifying the promotion of digital education in the country in the coming year.
The dawn of technology has not only transformed the concept of imparting education from an archaic system, but also changed the mindsets of both the educationists and students as they move towards adopting new age learning methodologies with open arms. Having said that, the year 2018 might be a tipping point for this segment with an exponential increase in the number of content providers, tutors, and students, thereby creating a future full of thinkers, innovators and above all, enlightened learners!
