When Tech Forces Come Together
How Dell Technologies plans to join the bandwagon of tech companies investing in the IoT, cloud computing and security

It is all about collaboration. Two years ago, when Dell acquired EMC in 2015, it was seen as amalgamation of two different cultures. At the Dell EMC World 2017 held in Las Vegas from 8 to 11 May, however, it hardly seemed so. The joint event for customers, partners, developers and others in their ecosystem seemed to be hosted by one large tech family. All brands in the Dell Technologies stable (Dell, EMC, Pivotal, Virtustream, VMware, SecureWorks, RSA) were represented at this conference.
Like all other tech companies, inclined towards sprucing up the digital capabilities, Dell EMC, too, announced their plans at the event. The theme for the event was ‘Realize your digital future’ or about making IT transformation real. The theme aimed at four types of transformations: digital transformation, IT transformation, workforce transformation and security transformation.
Michael Dell, Chairman and CEO of Dell Technologies, explained why digital transformation is so crucial to the company. “CEOs have moved beyond the need to be convinced that there is a digital transformation. They see digital disruption everywhere; transformation is tremendous and they are looking for a strategy and a partner to help them along this journey,” said Dell.
To a question posed by BW Businessworld on how Dell is helping CXOs justify the investments they make in technology, the 52-year-old Dell said that CEOs invest in IT to be more productive. “We have been talking a lot about digital transformation, but when you talk to the CEO about it, he says you need to do that within the budget. They look to the infrastructure and ask how could they make it more efficient and enable digital transformation. A lot of the things we are doing with our customers, products and innovations is to enable that transformation.”
Focus On Cloud
Dell’s cloud strategy includes infrastructure from Dell EMC, software from VMware and a set of services packaged from various cloud service providers. “The first part of our strategy is to support a multi-cloud world to enable your companies to make the digital transformation. The second part of our strategy concerns the infrastructure the cloud runs on,” said David Goulden, President, Dell EMC outlining the roadmap for digital transformation.
At the event, Dell Technologies went all out to make its cloud strategy clear to customers. It showed the segregation of products from its cloud portfolio. Dell now has a huge task of convincing its current and prospective customers on what products are the “right fit” for their businesses.
