The year 2019 will be full of surprises. First and foremost, uppermost on everyone’s mind, is the general elections, due later this year. Everyone, including the corporates, are waiting with bated breath on the outcome. Present indicators suggest a tough fight for the incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi, notwithstanding measures like quotas for economically weaker sections.

The latest measure, however, has rekindled the clamour for caste-based quotas in the country, which is only likely to further intensify in the poll year.

What will not be a surprise, however, is that the farm sector, in acute distress, will finally get some succour in 2019 — even if it’s prompted by the elections.

Technology will play a huge role in our lives. It already does, but it will further make humans redundant in many jobs, making the task of reskilling for the existing workforce imperative.

Technology will also reshape our domestic lives. The Internet of things will make our homes smarter. Our gadgets will come in newer forms. 5G will be a reality in the New Year. TV screens, as also smartphone screens, will be foldable.

The government claims to be taking giant strides towards housing for all. While the claim may be open to scrutiny, what is not open to debate is that the real estate sector will grow across all its sub-sectors — residential, commercial and affordable housing.

Important for the workforce is the development of co-working spaces. They will only grow and consolidate in the coming year.

Markets will be difficult in 2019 — you may end up buying stocks too high or selling stocks too low. But 2019 should be the year for cutting risks and maximising gains.

In defence, 2019 will be a watershed year for the Indian Air Force. The IAF will get Apache and Chinhooks helicopters. The first lot of Rafale jets and Tejas fighters will also be inducted in the IAF. The other two wings of the military, too, would hope for renewed supplies.

In automobiles, a slew of launches are lined up.

The following pages give you a glimpse of what 2019 has in store for you. You can only get a sense of empowerment reading through the pages.
