What Is Powder Metallurgy And Why Is It Important For India To Create Indigenous Production Plants

For those people who aren’t well versed with science, Powder Metallurgy is the science of manufacturing metal powders(ferrous and non ferrous) and their metal components. The aforementioned metal components are a part of everyone’s daily lives in various forms such as automotive parts, household appliances, industrial tech and many other products.

If we take a look at the automotive industry, India is one of the biggest automotive manufacturers across the globe and on an average, consumes about 1.35 lakh tonnes of sponge iron powders every year. The problem is that we doesn’t have enough local plants to produce metal powders that can meet the countries requirements and hence we have to heavily rely on importing these powders from counties like China.

There are numerous ways to produce sponge iron powders such as two stage reduction of iron mill scales and the Direct Reduction of Iron using magnetite ores.
