We are living in a digital world of data with multiple devices from our mobile phones, to laptop, to online websites and apps. It's data everywhere from the pictures we click, to mp3 to videos, services we use that again are either pictures, music or videos. Now imagine getting your pie of data from the cloud services, from the various devices and having it stored and readily available in your own house and also remotely anywhere. That is exactly what WD My Cloud Home is about.
WD - My Cloud Home
My Cloud is a new personal cloud storage solution that empowers consumers to take control of their often-scattered digital content. Consumers can easily aggregate all their photos, videos and files from their smartphones, computers, USB storage, cloud and social media accounts in one central place.
The design pattern is similar to the new WD My Passport series as you can see in the attached image. It's a good looking device and comes in variants from the 2TB to 8 TB
The device comes in following variants
My Cloud Home
Automated Centralized Content
The device offers an automated solution to continuously copy content from various devices.
It's like having all the scattered content in a single place on an autopilot.
Transfer from Online
It also allows you to connect to and transfer content from their social media platforms and favorite cloud services such as Dropbox, Box, Google Drive and Facebook.
Using their smartphone, tablet or computer from anywhere with an internet connection one can connect with My Cloud. You can also share the content. So basically an internet connection is all you need.
Smart TV linkage
Through Plex app that can be downloaded for both the Smart TV and the My Cloud Home and videos, music can be streamed from the My Cloud Home to the Smart Tv
What's not great
Using this device from the Android app can be bit of a challenge. Even the Google Playstore rating is 2.2. The good news is WD is responding to queries and making development changes. Hopefully the new version of app will be better.
It's too limited. WD needs to work on functionalities.
Be clear on your storage needs before you buy this device. You cannot expand the storage capacity of My Cloud Home. Also if hard drive crashes for some reason your data is gone. The solution is for that My Cloud Duo (dual mirroring storage) but that comes at an extra cost mentioned below.

The Last Word
Overall it's a great device. Getting 2TB to 8TB anywhere on the go is a great thing. The pricing on Amazon is much cheaper. At the time of writing this article the 2TB variant is priced at Rs.12,000 and 4TB variant at Rs.15,600. That's well worth the money. No additional subscription costs for cloud services. That's a good deal truly. However the challenge comes in terms of speed at times especially if you want stream movies remotely. Be sure to have a good router.
