Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, is one of the best places to visit down south. It holds many amazing destinations that can impress tourists from all age-groups. You might get short of time while traveling and exploring Chennai, but Chennai will never get short of places to entertain you. Chennai has so much to offer that it may get crowded sometimes but thankfully there are many places near Chennai that are equally beautiful and easily accessible offering a whole lot of adventure, exploration, sight-seeing, and food.  


Yelagiri, around 228 kilometres away from Chennai, is a small hill town known for its beauty and it offers never-ending fun and frolic through adventure sports. Less than five hours from Chennai by road, it is the perfect spot for trekking, paragliding, and boating. The Yelagiri Summer Festival is really hard to miss when the entire town is buzzing with cultural activities, musical performances and shows, and scrumptious food. You can enjoy boating in Punganoor Lake Park, go trekking in Swamimalai Hills or connect with God through Jalagandeeswarar Temple and Velavan Temple, Yelagiri has it all.  


Pondicherry is one of the seven Union Territories of India. Around 151 kilometres away from Chennai, Pondicherry reflects French culture through its architecture, cuisine, and language. Pondicherry is a must-visit destination for anyone visiting the South and is truly an extraordinary experience. The streets of the White Town (the French Quarter) are filled with spectacular mustard-yellow colonial structures with Bougainvillea laden walls. These streets are topped with cozy cafes, French bakeries and chic boutiques that offer mouth-watering French cuisine and beverages. Pondicherry also includes places like Auroville, Ousteri Lake, Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Seaside Promenade which is worth exploring.  


Just 133 kilometres away from Chennai, Tirupati is the perfect place to calm your soul in the beautiful surrounding.  The majestic Tirupati temple is one of the major attractions in the entire world which witness a large number of people and devotees throughout the year. Tirupati is one of the holiest Hindu pilgrimages, and is called the "Spiritual Capital of Andhra Pradesh". Sri Venkateswara National Park located in the Seshachalam Hills is a beautiful biosphere reserve which is the home to a number of endangered flora and fauna. Tirupati is also full of fun things to entertain visitors including waterfalls, camping, trekking and great food which makes it a perfect place for a weekend getaway.  


Constructed in the 11th century, Chandragiri Fort is one of the most attractive places to visit near Chennai. Around 145 kilometres away, Chandragiri is a small ancient town that will not disappoint you if you love exploring the historical places. The place has so much to offer in terms of forts, palaces, lakes, waterfalls, museums and good food that it is really hard not to put it in your go-to list when visiting the south. Chandragiri Lake and Rani Mahal are a few places you can discover while being there.  


Nellore is the dream destination for all nature lovers. Filled with natural beauty, Nellore is just 174.9 kilometres away from Chennai. It is the perfect place for wildlife, especially bird lovers as it consists of a number of nature parks and sanctuaries, namely Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary, which offers you the experience of trekking through the woods in search of hundreds of species of local and migratory birds. Udayagiri Fort and Venkatagiri Fort are great for some sightseeing and exploration. Paturu Village is the perfect place to shop if you love collecting handicrafts.
