For the first time, knitwear exports from India's knitwear capital Tirupur has crossed Rs 13,000 crore in value terms in a year. Total knitwear exports from this small town in Tamilnadu was worth Rs 13,000 crore in 2012-13, a growth of 4 per cent over the  previous year figures of Rs 12,500 crore. Tirupur contributed 19 per cent of India's total woven and knitwear fabric exports worth Rs 70,312 crore in value terms in 2012-13.

The growth in exports was made possible by the entrepreneurs’ efforts to tap newer markets. Traditionally Tirupur is dependent on the US and Europe for its revenues - about 30 per cent from the US and 60 per cent from Europe. In July last year, about 150 exporters had visited Japan, a knitwear market dominated almost entirely by the Chinese. Orders also came from England. The exporters of Tirupur are also trying to tap the new markets of Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, Russia and South Africa.

The growth in exports during last year will be a relief for Tirupur, which is recovering from pollution control issues, that led to closure of over 800 dyeing units. Growth in exports were stagnant in the last few years, in and around Rs 12,500 crore in value terms.

The knitwear town had touched Rs 11,000 crore worth of knitwear exports in 2006-07, but the next year, exports fell to Rs 9500 crore.  The knitwear cluster has around 6250 units operational, employing around 3 lakh people directly and another 2.5 lakh people indirectly.

According to Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA) sources, individual effluent treatment plants (IETPs) and common effluent treatment plants (CETPs) in Tirupur have successfully achieved zero liquid discharge (ZLD), a first of its kind achievement in the world for knitwear making hubs. About 500 dyeing and bleaching units are attached to 18 CETPs, and another 154 units have their own ETPs.
