Health insurance purchases and staying fit go hand in hand. In a recent survey done by ICICI Lombard, 78 per cent of individuals who seek fitness already have some health insurance, as compared to only 45 percent who have purchased health insurance but don't do fitness related activities.

Commenting on the findings, Sanjeev Mantri, Executive Director, ICICI' Lombard General Insurance Company Ltd. Said: "We have seen that there is a clear relation between being fit and health insurance. With the increase in purchasing power and rising GDP, more people are taking health insurance and are increasingly becoming conscious about wellness in their daily lives. There is enough and more happening in relation to wellness, and even the government is doing a lot to promote wellness."

The study further reveals that wellness activities such as yoga and gym along with a balanced diet are key triggers to engaging in wellness. Exercising in the gym is higher amongst men whereas women follow yoga more extensively. 51 per cent of the respondents who do not indulge in wellness activities manage stress by listening to music (more observed in Kolkata) and 46 per cent by relaxing (more observed in Lucknow) while those who do wellness activities manage stress by doing exercise/ yoga generally while listening to music.

Respondents from metropolitan cities associated wellness with being healthy in general (75 per cent) whereas those from non-metros related wellness with prolonged life (68 per cent). Among those who performed wellness activities, 69 per cent associated it with preventing illness, compared to only 52 per cent of those who did not do any wellness activity.

Furthermore, the association of balanced diet with wellness was higher among people in non-metro cities, whereas regular exercise was perceived to be most important in metro cities.

Besides, 47 per cent of those surveyed thought that health insurers were offering suitable wellness related packages, and 48 per cent of the non-metro residents believed that Health Insurers were well placed to offer wellness services. In this regard, ICICI Lombard has been providing various incentives to its customers to keep their customers fit, which includes memberships, etc. "We do what is required in our customer to keep himself fit, and of course, we will be there in case of any eventuality," said Mantri.

But the awareness for insurer offered wellness services was low among current owners of health insurance, and is limited to OPD related benefits or discount vouchers.

The survey was carried out among 1500 respondents in 10 cities ahead of the 'World Nutrition Week' being celebrated from 1st to 7th September, 2016.
