The Social Circuit: The Game Changer

Snapchat has come a long way since its launch five years ago, when it was an app that was used to send photos that self-destruct to friends.

Snapchat’s latest version, called Chat 2.0, allows users to now make audio and video calls through the app, switch between calls and messages simultaneously and send stickers.

The app has come a long way since its launch five years ago, when it was an app that was used to send photos that self-destruct to friends. Over the years, the app has evolved much, with the addition of Stories, Chat 1.0 and Discover tabs.

“When we first launched Chat, our goal was to emulate the best parts of face-to-face conversation. Chat 1.0 was all about the joys of being there — when most apps told you when your friend was typing, Chat let you know that your friend was listening. Two years later, we have learned a ton about how people talk, but our goal remains unchanged. We want Chat to be the best way to communicate — second only to hanging out face-to-face,” the company said in a blog post.

Audio and video calls can be made through the chat interface itself. The users can now also send stickers with over 200 options available.

In Chat 2.0, Snapchat Stories now auto-advance. “When you finish a Story, the next one begins automatically — simply swipe to skip ahead, or pull down to exit,” the blog post explained. Another new feature is audio and video notes. The users can now send maximum 10-seconds of thumbnail-sized video or audio messages.
With the new features, Snapchat seems to be gearing up to give competition to the established mobile messaging leaders such as Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger.

BRAND BUZZ
Shot In 60 Seconds

The Facebook-owned app, Instagram, has now launched 60-second videos, up from 15 seconds earlier, opening up more options for brands and users. “We want to bring you fun, flexible and creative ways to create and watch video on Instagram. As part of our continued commitment, you will soon have the flexibility to tell your story in up to 60 seconds of video. This is one step of many you will see this year,” the company said in a blog post. Longer video on Instagram is available immediately in US and will be available globally soon.

DIG THE DATA
Bad Bots

According to Distil Networks‘ 2016 report, while the bad bots are being brought under control, some countries still experience higher bot rates than others. Maldives has 526 bad bots per legitimate online user, Israel has 168, and the other countries in the top 10 have at least 16 bots per user. This is a huge increase from 2014 to 2015, and their behaviour is growing more sophisticated.

Swell Stats
According to vice president of messaging products of Facebook David Marcus, Messenger now has more than 900 million monthly active users, and that more than 1 billion messages are sent each month between Messenger users and businesses or pages.
