The First Of The Season

We’re living in uncertain times. Social activists have shaken up our murky politics by unsettling the equilibrium by which rival politicians kept each other’s — and their relatives’ — dirty secrets and corrupt deals under the carpet in a tacit quid pro quo. More and more cases are surfacing and allegations are flying thick and fast. And the government’s fate hangs by a thread in the run-up to the winter session of Parliament.

Our economy, more sensitive to the global economy than ever before, is in a state of siege. Stock markets are rising on the basis of announcements, not fundamentals. Our economic growth is lower than targeted, inflation is high and industrial growth and industrial investments are flat. Where we are we headed is anybody’s guess. Much of that is reflected in corporate performance too.

As always, the BW Real 500 listing of India’s biggest companies is in your hands as the first and the fastest corporate listing of the season (most annual reports are finalised by the end of September). On the 11th anniversary of this annual exercise, we have for you 26 rankings across different parameters, and their analysis, spread over 53 pages, which makes the BW Real 500 the most definitive ranking of corporate performance every year. These rankings have been carefully identified to slice and dice listed and unlisted companies’ financial performance in a way that can be of value to every possible stakeholder — investor, lender, borrower, employee, business associate and customer — when he deals with a company.

Who are the biggest by revenue, profit and assets? Who is bearing the maximum burden of debt and who is paying the maximum interest? Who has the most subsidiaries? Who are the largest employers? Which are the largest companies with no debt on their balance sheet? Who paid the highest dividend by percentage and who by value? Who delivered the best earnings per share?

If you have a question on corporate India’s financials, the BW Real 500 is mostly likely to have an answer. For those hungry for more, a larger ranking, the BW Real 1000, is on our website www.businessworld.in. You are welcome to explore. Your comments and suggestions on improving the listing are welcome too.
