Suhail Sameer: Driving Market Efficiently

A fine example of a leading successful intrapreneur, Suhail Sameer finds his failures and learnings as his real inspiration. “We aspire to provide consumers with products which improve the quality of life at an affordable price,” said Sameer, CEO of the FMCG business for the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group and winner of BW Businessworld’s 40 Under 40. Being a disrupter himself, he has proudly created a brand from scratch which has scaled well in a highly fragmented and competitive FMCG market in India.
Sameer has led the launch of some of the most renowned brands of the group including its first brand Too Yumm! He adds, “Over the last two years, we have acquired/ launched two other brands, and created a strong foundation for a potentially large FMCG industry. Having said that, I am proud of the fact that we have created a highly motivated and engaged team which is well placed to take this business forward.”
Just like other industries, the FMCG market is also going through a significant shift. On this Sameer informs that with the growth in modern distribution models as well as digital and influencer marketing, there has been a paradigm change on how one reaches and influences consumers to purchase their products. “As a new brand, we are taking this as an opportunity to lead this shift, and are doing our best to fully leverage these relatively new opportunities to showcase and grow our brand,” informs Sameer. The current economic slowdown has left no industry untouched which has by and large affected the business environment of the country. However, under the leadership of Sameer, the company is focussed on the efforts to bring in internal improvements. He added, “We are focussing on building distribution for our brands, on new growth opportunities, launching products to further complement our portfolio, driving distribution and marketing efficiencies.” “This way, hopefully, when the business cycle turns, we would be better placed to capitalise on the growth opportunities,’’ said Sameer.
An IIM Lucknow and Delhi College of Engineering alumni, Sameer gives credit to his observational traits and Sanjiv Goenka for his successful journey. He added, “I draw most inspiration from his ability to think bold, yet manage risks. To see him continue to push the boundaries of growth and aspirations, yet plan thoughtfully, is inspiring.”
Considering himself an impactful leader and entrepreneur, Sameer has led both the brands Too Yumm! and Dr Vaidya in an innovative way while providing healthier alternatives to conventional things available in the market. Sameer aims to have a turnover of more than 10,000 crores which shall bring great products to the consumers.
Reconciling his journey, Sameer remembers the time when Too Yumm! was being launched. He informs, “We wanted to launch the brand in five months from scratch to catch the 2017 IPL season. However, while most of our partners denied about its timliness, we somehow nailed it. But we learned that no matter of work in corporate board-rooms and R&D labs can outpace the learning one gets in the market, through actual consumer feedback. According to Sameer, a leader is the reflection of his team. Focus should be given on building the right team by giving them the right direction and then letting them unleash their potential.
Entrepreneurship for Sameer is getting honest feedback from your consumers and listening to varied options available. Emphasising on seeking out more intra-prenuership opportunities, he says, “Success is not dependent on how smart you are; it is dependent on how fast you learn, and how well you use those learnings.
