APPFRESH, an e-market for delivering fresh meat, was co-founded by Shruti Gochhwal in 2015. It has re-defined the $30-35 billion Indian meat market by creating a process by which fresh meat can be delivered to consumers. “As convenience and service in this category was missing, I got inspired to start Zappfresh. I believe strongly in the farm-to-fork model. My sole aim is to change consumer behaviour and buying pattern, along with creating awareness about fresh and hygienic meat,” says Gochhwal.
“In the last three years,” she goes on to say, “I have worked extensively across the value chain from developing and working with farmers and ensuring adherence to best quality standards to ensuring temperature control till the last mile.”
Given how busy our lives are, the impact of stress and the rise in lifestyle diseases, the need for healthy food is paramount. What we eat impacts our lives in a significant way and, through Zappfresh, Gochhwal provides good uality products.
“When I visited the local market in Delhi, which supplies 95 per cent of Delhi’s meat requirements, the unhygienic conditions, lack of water, no temperature control and the unbearable stench of Gazipur Mandi made me decide to do something to change the meat-eating habits of people,” says Gochhwal.
Zappfresh sources its meats from the best breeds, raised in a hygienic, humane environment. Its focus is on making the meat industry organised and in redefining practices for the meat industry with high-quality farms, hygienic slaughter houses and a state-ofthe-art cold chain supply.
Even though the meat delivery market in India is still dominated by unorganised meat sellers who space, online meat sellers will witness a six-fold growth over the next five years. Zappfresh has been operationally profitable right from the first year of operations. Its revenue last year was $5.5 million and s growing at 100 per cent year- on year.
The Success Mantra
As an entrepreneur, Gochhwal has understood the market thoroughly. The team’s dedication and hard work has led to a 90 per cent repeat rate of customers for the brand. Gochhwal attributes her success in the business to “Pivoting the business wherever needed, the role of passion and determination and not giving up in the worst of times.”
She says she was able to achieve what she did by “never compromising on anything related to customers.” According to her, “the importance of staying humble and not letting anything get to your head, managing stress, and the value of team work are all important aspects of being an entrepreneur,” says Gochhwal.
