Chennai-based popular Bullet motorcycle maker Royal Enfield has launched its adventure tourer Himalayan bike priced at Rs 155,545 (ex-showroom, Maharashtra).

Deliveries of the bike will commence from this month and the on-road price of Himalayan in Mumbai is Rs 178,872.

"Large adventure tourers that currently define this category, do not fare well in the Himalayas as they are very heavy, extremely complicated, intimidating and not really designed for this environment. With its purpose-built ground-up design, the Himalayan is a simple and capable go-anywhere motorcycle that will redefine adventure touring in India," said Siddhartha Lal, managind director and chief executive officer of Eicher Motors Ltd, at the launch.

The Himalayan was showcased first early last month just before the start of the Auto Expo.

Powered by a 411cc engine, the bike is designed to ride on any terrain. It is tuned to produce 24.5 bhp of peak power at 6500 rpm and 32 Nm of torque at 4500 rpm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed gearbox.

The bike is a big launch for the company as it will play a critical role in its ambition to dominate the mid-size motorcycle space (250 to 750 cc) globally.

Royal Enfield in recent years has expanded its operation manifolds in overseas. Last month the company entered Thai Market. The Eicher Motors-owned company has been constantly ramping up its production capacity. It plans to produce 9 lakh units per year by 2018.
