Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday (19 June) has announced the name of Bihar Governor and Dalit leader Ramnath Kovind as the NDA’s candidate for the post of President.

With President Pranab Mukherjee’s term expiring on July 24 2017, the presidential elections in India will be held on July 17. The last date of filing the nomination papers for Presidential elections is June 28. The results of the poll will be out on July 20 and the next president will take charge from next day after the announcement of results.

71-years old Kovind is likely to file his papers on June 23, BJP president Amit Shah said after a nearly two-hour meeting of the BJP Parliamentary Board. He said political parties had been informed of NDAs choice. "I hope all will agree to the name," he said at a press conference.

Ramnath Kovind was elected as Member of Rajya Sabha for two terms (1994 to 2000 and 2000 to 2006) from Uttar Pradesh. Kovind, former President of BJP Dalit Morcha and President of All-India Koli Samaj have always sought tougher laws to control the growing incidents of cruelty on dalits. He has worked hard to uplift poor, dalits, and extremely backwards.

An advocate by profession, Kovind had practiced in Delhi High Court and Supreme Court for 16 years. He was Central Government advocate in Delhi High Court from 1977 to 1977 and Central Government Standing Counsel in Supreme Court from 1980 to 1993.

Earlier, Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj, Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Murmu, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, ‘Metro Man’ E Sreedharan and the Minister of Social Justice Thawar Singh Gehlot were also believed to be the NDA’s strong contenders in the race for President of India.

In the Opposition side, former Lok Sabha Speaker Meera Kumar, JD (U) leader Sharad Yadav, former West Bengal Governor and Mahatama Gandhi’s grandson Gopalkrishna Gandhi are the probable contenders of UPA in the race for President.

Opposition parties will meet on June 22A to decide on fielding a consensus candidate for the presidential election, with the NDA declaring Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind as its nominee for the post, Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agarwal today said.

"The parties will meet and decide whether or not to field a consensus opposition candidate for the July 17 presidential election," he said.
