The Delhi government on Wednesday reduced the value-added tax (VAT) on petrol to 19.40 per cent from 30 per cent previously. This reduction would give consumers a huge relief as petrol in the capital will now get cheaper by Rs 8 per litre.

The new rates will come into effect from midnight today.

The central government on the eve of Diwali had slashed excise duty on petrol by Rs 5 per litre and on diesel by Rs 10 per litre in a bid to bring down the rising burden due to increasing fuel prices. Since then the onus was on various state governments to reduce their respective VATs to give further relief to consumers.
